George de Lawedre appears as both a Steward and a witness to a charter inspection by James Douglas [then in exile in England], on 15th January 1457/8, of a previous charter originally drawn up on 18 July 1423, by Archibald, [5th] Earl of Douglas, Lord of Galloway and Annandale and of the Regality of Lauder, to John de Heriot of Trabroun, armiger.[1] It is presumed that this George Lauder is of the Haltoun family who were very closely associated with the Douglas family and appear in a great many of their charters. This would explain his appearance as Steward for James Douglas.
